What is a cenote?

Be careful when going down

Most of these bodies of water tend to be underground (not all of them, some may be at the same height from the ground that you step on) and therefore, going down can become a bit complicated.

For the entrances, steps are adapted on the same stone or wooden stairs with good support are placed. Whatever the option you find, you must be very careful when going down and up, as due to the humidity the steps are very slippery. Wearing water shoes or sandals might be a good idea, as they provide stability.

Wear a life jacket

Even if you know how to swim, follow this rule and don't take risks. The water in the cenotes is usually very cold, this reduces our resistance and can cause cramps, which in turn can lead to drowning. Also, keep in mind that most cenotes are really deep, so, it’s better to stay safe when swimming there. 

Don't climb the dome

Inside the cenotes, specially when they’re closed like a cave, you can find stalactites and stalagmites. Even if you’re tempted, please don’t climb them. This also applies to the walls and the dome in general. Although there are rocks on the perimeter of the cenote that are safe to climb or step on, do not do it. 

Please stay within the safe areas.

Pay attention to the signs

Stay aware of diving areas, prohibited areas, bathrooms and other services. Do not access restricted areas.
